How to Scan a QR Code From an Image

A camera is useless when the QR code is already a picture on your screen. Here is the fastest way to read a QR code from any saved image, screenshot, or photo.

Which image files work?

  • Photos taken with your phone camera (JPG, HEIC exported as JPG)
  • Screenshots of websites, apps, tickets, or chat messages (PNG)
  • WebP and GIF images saved from the web
  • A QR code cropped out of a PDF or invoice and saved as an image

Files up to 10 MB are supported. If a very large photo takes a while, cropping tightly around the QR square makes decoding almost instant.

Why some images fail — and how to fix them

  • Blurry or motion-shaken photos: retake or use a sharper screenshot.
  • Glare and reflections on a screen or glossy paper: change the angle and reshoot.
  • Too much background: crop so the QR code fills most of the frame.
  • Low contrast (grey on grey): increase brightness or contrast before uploading.
  • A partially covered or torn code: QR codes tolerate some damage, but a missing corner square usually cannot be recovered.

Is it private?
